What features to look out for in a vacuum cleaner

Every household needs a vacuum cleaner to help keep it free of dust, dirt, pet hair and more. From carpets to hardwood floors, stairs to flats, living with pets or allergies, the right vacuum cleaner will keep your home clean and fresh. How do you know what features you should be looking out for? What features do you need to suit your lifestyle, floor type and cleaning needs? Find out all you need to know about vacuum cleaner features below.

How to choose a vacuum cleaner?

From cordless vacuums to bagless vacuum cleaners, those with the best suction to the best battery life, there are different features to consider when choosing a new vacuum cleaner that will work for you.

Suction power

One of the most important features to look out for is suction power. The power you need depends on what you want to clean. Vacuums with low suction strength can handle picking up dust on wooden floors and hard surfaces. If you have thick carpets or hairy pets, then a stronger suction will have the power to suck up all the dust, dirt and debris. Suction power is related to motor power, but a high motor power does not ensure good suction or good cleaning. All vacuum cleaners made or imported in the EU must have a motor of 900w or less.

The Samsung Bespoke Jet AI vacuum has up to 280W* suction power, an airflow-boosting design and cyclonic filters, the best suction vacuum to clean every surface from hard floors to carpets and rugs. The airflow-boosting design and cyclonic filters ensure you have serious suction for longer and pick up everything from spilt cereal to stubborn pet hair in seconds.

Battery life

For cordless vacuums, battery life is a key feature. You want it to last long enough for you to get the cleaning done in one go. Battery life varies massively, with some models lasting only seven minutes on full power to the best battery Samsung vacuum cleaners lasting over an hour.

With up to 100 minutes run time¹ the Bespoke Jet AI is designed with a long-lasting, removable battery to let you power through the entire house in one go. In fact, you can clean your way with the flexibility to mix and match two types of interchangeable batteries. The large capacity battery is perfect when it comes to a whole house clean or alternatively swap to the lightweight battery for daily or spot cleaning. With both batteries retaining 70% of original performance up to 500 cycles² and coming with a 2-year warranty³ you can clean non-stop for longer.

Other Samsung Jet™ range vacuums such as the lightweight but powerful Samsung Jet 70 Turbo and Jet 60 Turbo can also last up to 40 minutes⁴. Bigger job? You can simply replace the battery or quickly charge up. The stand-alone charging dock on the Jet 90; the Z Station, makes charging easy. You can place, park and charge it anywhere, without having to drill walls. You’ll go from 0% to 100% in just 3.5 hours⁵. And if you have two batteries⁶, dual charging adapters let you power them both up at the same time.

Bin capacity

The vacuum bin capacity is how much dust your vacuum cleaner can hold before it needs emptying. There are two options, a bagged or bagless vacuum cleaner. With a bagged machine all the dust and dirt is trapped in a disposable bag which you then remove and dispose of. With a bagless vacuum, you have a reusable container that you empty without the need for disposable bags.

With the Samsung Jet™range this is made simple – no mess, no hassle. The entire dustbin is washable so you can keep it fresh. But we get it, having to wash the dustbin after cleaning your room may not sound ideal. That’s why with the Clean Station™ ™ all you need to do is to remove the dustbin, place it on top of the Clean Station™ and let it do the hard job for you. The dustbin will automatically empty itself!

Cable length

Corded vacuum cleaners vary in cable length from around 12 to 25 feet. The longer the cable, the more places you can get to. The shorter the cable, the fewer obstacles it will get caught on.

Even better with cordless vacuum cleaners you can save the hassle of switching power outlets whilst cleaning, avoid obstacles and have the freedom to move around, uninterrupted.

Gone are the days with sore arms after a big cleaning day, the Samsung Jet™ range is cordless and lightweight, with most models coming in at 2.8kg or less, making them easy to move up and down the stairs.

Extra features

There are a few other things to look out for when choosing a vacuum cleaner with features to help you.

If you’ve got hard floors then a vacuum sweeper is an ideal feature to keep them looking their best. The some models in the Samsung Jet™ range has a Spinning Sweeper, the two speedy rotating wet pads get your hard floors gleaming so you no longer have to reach for the mop after you’ve vacuumed.

An adjustable vacuum helps you get the job done with minimal effort and interchangeable cleaning tools let you adapt to different surfaces or cleaning needs. The Samsung Bepoke Jetᵀᴹ range and Samsung Jet 90 come with a Soft Action brush to pick up pet hairs and tiny particles, an adjustable Telescopic Pipe which you can lower or extend to get to every nook and cranny, and a Turbo Action brush which spins fast and has greater suction and more. The two in one model also offers more flexibility, allowing you to use the cordless vacuum in its upright position, or detach one section to use as a handheld appliance.

For anyone suffering from allergies or living with pets, keeping your home free of dust and pet hair is very important. A good filtration system can make all the difference. Samsung cordless vacuums are your best solution as they use a multi-layered filtration system to reduce allergens*, capturing 99.99%** of dust particles***.

Weight and Design

The Samsung Jet 60 Turbo is at the forefront of lightweight vacuum design; with a handheld body weight of just 1.48Kg you’ll enjoy effortless cleaning at the touch of a button. How many watts is a good vacuum cleaner?

The higher the wattage the better, right? Well, not necessarily. Wattage is actually only a measurement of how much power (electricity) will be consumed when using your machine. When deciding which vacuum cleaner to choose, you’ll want to explore the amount of suction and airflow the vacuum has. Suction refers to how quickly the air is moved through your vacuum in order to spin the motor faster. Advancements in technology mean that better suction means better performance without necessarily increasing power consumption (wattage).

Samsung's Jet cordless vacuum range boasts industry-leading suction power because of the innovative Digital Inverter Motor, which utilises the same design specs found in a highly engineered aeroplane engine. The Digital Inverter Motor not only boosts the airflow but spins the motor at a speed to rival even the fastest engines. So you can be safe in the knowledge that when you’re whizzing around the living room you’ll get serious suction power. And that’s not all, the astonishing 28 cyclones1 ensure airflow is boosted throughout your vacuum to give you a super hygienic deep clean every time.

1Based on the Bespoke Jet AI model, other models may have fewer cyclones.

Are stick vacuums good for carpets?

Samsung stick vacuums are all about being lightweight and versatile but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t good for capturing those pesky dirt particles that get trapped deep down inside carpets. In fact quite the opposite. With exceptional suction power, multi-layered filtration systems and impressive run times, you’ll experience deep cleaning right in the palm of your hand with the latest Samsung stick vacuum cleaners.

Does vacuuming get rid of germs?

Vacuuming isn’t only about getting rid of what the eyes can see. Your floors harbour bacteria, germs and can be a significant source of allergens. With the Samsung Jet series you can rest assured. The optimal Multi-layered Filtration System is proven to trap 99.999%* of dust** and reduces allergens*** that would normally escape back into the air through the vacuum exhaust. Furthermore, Samsung cordless vacuums are verified and certified by the British Allergy Foundation (BAF), SLG (Schubert Leiter Geratesicherheit) and UL.

What's more, you no longer have to contend with a face full of dust when emptying your vacuum dustbin. Simply place the dustbin on top of the Clean Station for a more convenient and hygienic way of emptying your dustbin. The stubborn dust particles are collected securely in the 2-litre sealed bag inside the device which will notify you when it is due to be replaced. You can also easily remove the vacuum's dustbin and internal rotating drum to give it a thorough wash out, ensuring that any lingering allergen and dust particles have been removed before it's ready for its next run.
