How to clean your Samsung microwave

The microwave is often the most frequently used appliance in the kitchen and one of the easiest to overlook when it comes to cleaning. Keeping it clean not only prevents lingering food odors but also stops old splatters from becoming stubborn stains. The trick is simple: wipe up messes as soon as they happen and give it a quick clean now and then. With a little consistency, you’ll never have to deal with that sticky buildup again.

Notes:

  • Never use abrasive cleaners or harsh solvents like alcohol, benzene, ammonia or paint thinner on your microwave.
  • Avoid steel wool and bleach, as they can damage the finish and may cause rust to form.
  • When cleaning the exterior, be careful not to let any liquid seep into the vents.

Some Samsung microwaves include a Steam Clean feature that makes cleaning quick and easy. If yours has this option, follow the instructions in your user manual. If not, don’t worry: you can still steam clean the interior manually to loosen hardened food and make stains easier to wipe away.

To do this, pour 500 mL of water (add a splash of lemon juice for extra freshness) into a 1-litre microwave-safe bowl. Microwave it on High for about 5 minutes, or until the water reaches a boil. Then, let the steam sit inside the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes before carefully removing the bowl.

For stubborn messes, you may need to repeat the steaming process a second time.

Once you’re done, wipe down the inside of the microwave with a clean, dry dish towel. Don’t forget to remove the turntable and clean underneath it, as well as under any racks using a paper towel.

If you’re already cleaning the inside of your microwave, don’t skip the turntable, as it collects just as much mess. You can use the same steam cleaning method from the previous section to help loosen stuck-on food.

For best results, wash the turntable once a week and clean the roller ring about once a month. Wipe up fresh spills right away to prevent them from setting. Just be cautious, as the turntable may still be hot after cooking.

The turntable is dishwasher safe. If you don’t have a dishwasher, simply remove it and wash it gently in warm, soapy water. Make sure it’s completely dry before placing it back in the microwave.

Your microwave might look spotless at first glance, but grime can build up in key areas over time. A quick weekly wipe with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water is usually enough to keep the exterior clean. Don’t forget to rinse and dry thoroughly to avoid streaks or residue.

Note: If you have an over-the-range microwave, it includes two filters that need regular attention. The grease filter should be cleaned once a month, while the charcoal filter needs to be replaced every 6 to 12 months, or more often if your cooking habits require it.

Clean the control panel

Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe the control panel, then dry it thoroughly. Avoid using sprays, abrasive cleaners (like bleach), excess soap and water, or sharp objects, as these can damage the surface.

Clean under the microwave

Each week, take a moment to remove dust and grease from underneath the microwave using warm water mixed with a small amount of dish detergent.

Clean the door and seals

Make sure the door seals stay clean, as any grime here can interfere with the microwave’s ability to close properly. Wash the glass door with mild soap and water using a soft cloth to avoid scratching the surface.

If you notice moisture on the inside or outside of the door, simply wipe it off with a soft cloth. This is usually just condensation caused by humidity and is perfectly normal during regular use.
